The obligatory first post about
I’m joining the cadre of academic bloggers, though in the ’still in graduate school’ group. I have yet to decide how much to share, but since it’s impossible to unshare, I will say I am in a humanity (I rather prefer the singular), in a large state school in the northeast. I’m from Canada, where I did my undergraduate work.I just finished my first year. And it’s a good thing I didn’t blog this year: it was terrible. But it was terrible for everyone, and people not in my cohort also told me the first year is always atrocious. And I still love my field. Normally within a day my field would be obvious, but since it’s summer and I have two full-time jobs that aren’t, exactly, in my field, I might keep it obscure until September.
I am also often a better writer than this, though also often a worse one.

I’m about to begin my first year this fall and am vastly interested in what specifically is so horrible the first year? (If you don’t mind sharing.) I’ve heard a lot of generalized complaints but many are from people who are at the phd level and the first year was a while back for them. I’m really looking forward to the experience; I hope it doesn’t all go in the gutter right off the bat!
