Double-booked
I just realised that there is a colloquium scheduled for Erev Rosh Hashana. This would be fine — I could be out by 4, 4:30, whch is early enough — except I had thought since it’s a weeeknd, I could go home for the holidays. Normally I would just skip the talk except (a) the speaker seems interesting [1] (although I skipped what sounded very interesting — though turned out to be fairly dull, I was told — last year and could do it again), (b) it’s the first colloq of the semester, which is a bad thing to skip, (c) the party after is being hosted by the faculty member who throws the best parties, and (d) I’m on the colloq committee.
I could just go home for Yom Kippur the next week, but the week after that is Thanksgiving so my family will be visiting me. Not that two weekends in a row is a lot.
[1] Of course, we don’t know what he’s speaking *about*. I need [2] to write an email confirming the date and asking if he has a title or an abstract.
[2] More crucially I need to sleep, now. Housewarming to go to tonight. [3]
[3] Look, my footnotes have footnotes.
