And then we made leis
Yesterday we went to Haliewa, a nice town on the North Shore. The waves are small — as they are supposed to be in the summer, no surfing now — but the tide is incredibly strong, probably the strongest I’ve ever felt.
It’s shallow all the way, so even someone short as I am could stand up when you’re quite far out. But the ground isn’t so nice to walk on, so mostly I swam back.
There were sea turtles in the water! We’d brought masks, so my sister & I could go underwater & see them. (We had — alas — not brought a waterproof camera.) There were two of them, clearly quite tame, because all of the 8 or 10 people in the water followed them around. They’re remarkably graceful swimmers.
The beach is beautiful.

Today, we went this morning to Senator Fong’s Plantation & Garden. It’s lovely — I saw what must be the best set of trees ever: a vanilla bean tree next to a cacao tree next to a coffee tree.
Eventually we stopped and got to look at over the bay.

These cool flowers are some kind of bromeliad. The stems are pink, the flowers are purple, and you can drink the nectar. It tastes sort of like honey, but sort of not.

I love swimming with sea turtles. They are so beautiful in the water and so surprisingly graceful, as you say. And knowing that you are swimming with an endangered species is pretty powerful, too.

Man. I’d still be staring at the vanilla, cacao and coffee trees if I’d been there. Or the view. Or both. *envy*
