&lt;i&gt;To his coy mistress&lt;/i&gt; is one of my favorite poems, one of the three or four I know by heart.  I once compressed the basic argument into four lines:

&lt;blockquote&gt;
If we were gonna live forever
I would write you a rhyme so clever
But we'll both die, so no such luck
I'm running late; can we just fuck?
&lt;/blockquote&gt;

Another famous response to Marvell is Archibald MacLeish's &lt;i&gt;You, Andrew Marvell&lt;/i&gt;.  MacLeish isn't easy for me, but I think he is twitting Marvell for those last two lines: &lt;i&gt;if we cannot make the Sun / Stand still, yet we will make him run.&lt;/i&gt;  No, says MacLeish.  Whether you get your lady into bed will make &lt;i&gt;no difference.&lt;/i&gt;</description>
