Leaving the house, but not being sociable anyhow!
I must rush off to do grocery shopping. I want to make a quiche — see? Again, without the chocolate. I also want to make chocolate cake, though I suspect I am too lazy.
But the real reason I need to rush is this: it is currently Saturday. Until this evening, all the religious Jews who grocery shop with, on average, 6 children are not going to go to the store. (Yes, it’s fine to bring children to the store. But it’s more pleasant for me when they’re not there, and given that this timing is so predictable, I try to take advantage of it.)
Of course I’m still just in my towel from lunch. Maybe I can convince myself to move fast.

Grocery store shopping on Saturday is hell. I somehow got stuck doing that last weekend (I never do) and compared it to barrelling down a tunnel towards that particular place.
C’mon. Admit it. You’re going to make chocolate quiche.

considering tomorrow (Sun) is a fast day, there probably won’t be many religious Jews in the grocery store…

Actually, it was just fine, for once, even though they’ve only got the 4 people in the store.
Chocolate quiche and spinach cake: you figured me out!

It’s just the children blocking the aislse that bothers me, not the fact of religious Jews. But at that grocery store, there are two sets of people: religious Jews and very old people. So it’s easy to know when to go to avoid children. Other grocery stores are less predictable.

I think what annoys me the most are the loud, obnoxious and rude children, sometimes accompanied by their loud, obnoxious and rude parents, and my big pet peeve is men who never go to the grocery store and don’t know grocery store etiquette.

Oh, yes, loud and rude is not fun. But mostly it annoys me if I cannot get through an aisle because people feel the need to block it.
Is there some specific grocery store etiquette?

Blockage of aisles would be an example of breach of grocery store etiquette.
July 25th, 2005 at 8:24 pm
Well, but that’s general bad store etiquette, no?

Yes, but not all stores have big carts like grocery stores.

This is true, though I think there is a similar problem with people sitting in the aisles in bookstores, reading. (Not browsing, just reading.)
