Sigh
Gah! My laptop, it is refusing to connect to the internet. I can plug the ethernet cable in — which works in my work computer just fine — and it claims to be connected, but it isn’t. This is not good. I really do not want to purchase a new computer right now. Though I would rather *like* a new computer, just without the part where they bill you for it.

This or this are significantly cheaper than a new computer, and easily accessible from McGill metro.

I have an external wireless card, and it has the same problem as my ethernet cable: it says it’s connected, then that there’s limited or no connectivity. (The card functions fine on another computer, as does the cable.) This is beyond my ability to troubleshoot.
I do actually need to purchase a new computer in the not-too-distant future, but I had hoped to delay it some months.

Well, you could try a Linux CD and see if the problem occurs there. Just download, burn and boot. Assuming your computer has a CD.

Uh, yeah. I could. Or I could just run Linux, what with having a dual boot OS which I totally forgot about.

Why, yes, that would work too!
