Do people not realise it is the epitome of rude to chat on the phone while you’re paying for stuff? Or — worse yet — having a conversation on the phone right under a “please do not use cell phones here” sign? Or — my least favourite — answering the phone while in the middle of an important conversation? There’s a reason you have voice mail.

You know what’s even ruder than all that? Chatting on the cell phone while occupying a stall in a public bathroom.
…well, maybe not quite as rude, but certainly pretty gross…

I agree. It’s so dehumanizing. When robots ring up your purchases, then you can talk on the phone.
I used to work at a business-class hotel and people would talk on their cell phones all the time while I was checking them out. The worst was some legal hotshot who dialed a number while I was checking him out. I asked him to step to the side, which he did because he was so busy talking on the phone, and checked out several other people. He was peeved and he complained and my manager told him nicely to stuff it. I later heard that he lost the big case he was working during his stay at the hotel. That fact still makes me happy.
