1558, the end of the reign of Mary Tudor (treaty actually cemented this in 1559, but who’s counting). Mary said of this, on her deathbed, that if they opened her up, they’d find the word “Calais” written on her heart.
Thanks. That’s somehow surprising, though I’m not sure what I expected the answer to be. Later, cause they kept fighting anyhow? Later, because why would they have given up entirely? Earlier, because — actually, I don’t know why earlier.

People were so melodramatic in the sixteenth century. If Mary’d been around in the twentieth, she could have had a car—perhaps one like this—and worn her sentiments on a bumper sticker (”Mon angleterre inclut Calais”) instead of on her ticker.
