A clue in a recent NYT crossword puzzle was “John Wayne has a little one”, five letters.

I don’t suppose the NYT would allow a puzzle which included penis as an answer, so I haven’t a clue.

No, though there was a racy-for-the-NYT example also, though I forget which it was.
It was not horse or steed, which were my guesses. Well, my guesses after penis. Hee hee hee, I will never be able to think of John Wayne the same way.
Disappointingly, the answer was actually drawl.
