Mournful
The solid grey kitten has died. When I phoned the vet yesterday and described the symptoms, she said to bring it in today. So, you know, I was waiting for today. But I woke up at quarter to six and the kitten, it was dying, twitching occasionally but otherwise not moving, and then it stopped twitching. And now it’s in a box on my living room floor, and I’m waiting for the vet to open, because there’s no point rushing to the vet for a dead kitten. The other cats seem fine, and I knew that this cat was really sick. So it no longer matters, really. I didn’t take care of it, didn’t insist at the vet, and now it’s dead, and I just hope that whatever it has is not communicable, because the other kittens and the mama cat and Matilda, they don’t deserve to get sick too.
I never even gave him a name.
Update: apparently it’s got all the hallmarks of panleukopenia, or distemper (though dr google hasn’t helped me understand *how* they knew, since the symptoms don’t really seem to match), which in a bit of horrifying full-circleness is what my very first cat ever died of. And of course it’s a virus that nothing really kills — anyone know if you can use bleach on hardwood floors? Upside: Matilda is almost certainly safe, as is mama cat. Downside: kittens are at risk.

Oh, wolfa! I’m so sorry. Just thinking of you standing there this morning watching the poor kitten in his death throes makes me tearful.

I’m so sorry! What a sad thing to go through. They’re such fragile little creatures at that age. Poor kitty (and poor you!).

Oh, I’m sorry too. Please don’t blame yourself, though. You did everything you could and it’s not your fault the vet screwed up.

Oh - so sorry to hear about all of this.He was a cutie. I agree that the vet messed up - you can’t be blamed. I hope the other kitties are all okay.
