Can you id these movies?
10 movies that I have enjoyed, as defined by the imdb plot keywords. I got rid of the really super obvious ones, but there are a few gimmes here.
1. Ship / Suspect / Myth / Mind Game / Hungarian
2. Anti Smoking / Shot In The Butt / Football Stadium / Sister Sister Relationship / Shot With Arrow
3. Deus Ex Machina / Court / Falsely Accused / Murder / On The Road
4. Overhead Camera Shot / Gang Warfare / Lover / Based On Musical / Knife Fight
5. Self Sacrifice / Whimsical / Witch / Romance / Magical
6. Culture Clash / Son / Paranoid / Family Relationships / Search
7. Steampunk / No Opening Credits / Throat Slitting / British Empire / Pirates
8. Group Mind / B Movie / Lesbian Slur / Swimming Pool / Family Dinner
9. Coastal Village / Funeral / French / Cannabis / Drug Dealing
10. Frog / Ruby / Boat / Toad / Slug
Bonus: Absurdism / Mugging / Black Comedy / Magician / Luggage
(I loved the bonus movie.)
I considered doing it with tv shows, but Heroes gets “Save the cheerleader”, ER gets “medical drama” and “Chicago Illinois”, and I thought I’d quit wasting my time. (Oddly, BtVS does not get anything like “vampire” or “horror” but stuff like “true love” and “student principal relationship”.)

(4) ought to be West Side Story, but I can’t identify any of the others. (Mugging as in for the camera, or mugging as in hold-up?)

You are correct. And 4 is one of the gimmes. The others are 1 and maybe 7. Perhaps if you’d seen 9 you’d recognise it.
Mugging as in hold-up. I am fairly sure I would not ever catch the bonus from its words.

Why do I suspect that 2 is an Adam Sandler film?
May 20th, 2007 at 7:07 pm
Oh, and 8 is that film *called* “Swimming Pool,” is it not? With Charlotte Rampling?
May 20th, 2007 at 7:24 pm
No and no, Jane. Sorry.
May 20th, 2007 at 9:39 pm
(1) is Usual Suspects, right?
May 20th, 2007 at 9:42 pm
Yup.
May 21st, 2007 at 1:12 pm
Hmmm. Is #5 Practical Magic?
May 21st, 2007 at 1:42 pm
Sorry, again no. I will post the real movies, probably tomorrow.

Ah, well, I don’t mind guessing. I will be curious to see if I have actually seen any of them.
May 21st, 2007 at 3:11 pm
But wait, one more. Even though I’m sure I’ve got it wrong (because of the French, which I don’t get). #9 OUGHT to be this film called Saving Grace, which if you haven’t seen, you should, because it has Brenda Blethyn and she is ten different types of awesome.

It is! And yes, that movie is all kinds of fun, and I think the, uh, seller she met was French. Everyone should see that movie.

Oh, of course. How could I forget him?
Well, I am delighted to have finally gotten one right…
May 21st, 2007 at 4:04 pm
If you can get any of the others, I’d be amazed. They’re sort of . . . odd.
May 21st, 2007 at 6:04 pm
(3) is My Cousin Vinnie and (7) is Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl.
May 21st, 2007 at 6:39 pm
Yes. Halfway done!
May 21st, 2007 at 7:40 pm
And I think (10) is Flushed Away, which I just saw and enjoyed. It’s the slug that reminded me ;)

You’re good. Alternatively, you’re cheating, very slowly. :)

Ah, well, based on the others, they’re not things I’ve seen.
I did wonder about PotC, but I don’t think I know what steampunk is, because I wouldn’t have used it as a keyword…
I owe you an email, btw. I am 2/3s through the finale…soon, I hope.

I didn’t cheat, but I did check my answers before posting ;). I’m not quite sure I agree with the “Steampunk” [wikipedia] designation for PotC.
The others I have no clue.

I don’t think PotC is steampunk, really, either. But since I think the keywords tend to be poorly chosen anyhow — deus ex machina wouldn’t be the first thing I thought of for My Cousin Vinny — I figured, what the hell, pirates are in the list.
