People are jerks
Someone stole my wallet tonight. Someone else returned it, but it is missing the credit card (cancelled, no unusual charges on it), cash (of course), maybe some bus tickets, and the pickup slip for my Harry Potter preorder, which was hiding behind some business cards (conveniently left in the same slot). Who carefully looks for a preorder of a book and steals that? It just seems so stupid and petty.

It does suck.
And I let the bookseller know, and they’ve put a “ask for picture id” on the order, and I can go with my order number and picture id (which they didn’t steal) and get the book. Thankfully. But still, it’s just so petty and annoying. Why would you steal a pre-order slip? And why would you take only one of two credit cards?

There’s an identifying number on that preorder? And you know the number? Go to the police! This is the kind of thing they love; it’s such an easy way to catch a thief. :D

I’m sorry; that’s really odd on the thief’s part.
I took a trip with some friends years ago and the car got broken into near a hotel. They took two sleeping bags and a couple of cds but left other cds behind. We figured they must not have liked those albums.

btw: watch the 2nd card carefully, of course - they might have the # anyway. And, what Cougar said. The bookseller should stall and call the cops if/when the f*er tries to pick up the book.
